What Harmful Chemicals Are Hiding in My Cleaning Products?

Have you ever stopped to think about what’s in your cleaning products? Unfortunately, many household cleaners secretly pack harmful chemicals that do more harm than good. In this post, we'll take a closer look at some of the most common culprits.

1. Ammonia: The Sneaky Respiratory Irritant

Ammonia is often found in glass cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, and some bathroom products. It does a great job at cutting through grease and grime, but it also does a number on your lungs. Inhaling ammonia vapors can irritate your respiratory system, causing coughing, wheezing, and even asthma-like symptoms.

Eco-Friendly Swap: Instead of ammonia, opt for a plant-based cleaner or a vinegar-water mix.

2. Phthalates: The Silent Endocrine Disruptors

Phthalates are used to make fragrances last longer in your cleaning products. However, these sneaky little chemicals are also linked to hormone disruption, which can impact everything from fertility to development. And guess what? Phthalates are not required to be listed on product labels.

Eco-Friendly Swap: Choose naturally-scented products made from essential oils.

3. Chlorine Bleach: The Not-So-Friendly Sanitizer

Chlorine bleach is a go-to for many cleaning tasks but it’s also a serious irritant. If you’re using bleach to sanitize your countertops or whiten your laundry, you’re exposing yourself to potential eye, skin, and respiratory issues. When mixed with other chemicals, bleach can even create toxic fumes, leading to dizziness, nausea, and headaches.

Eco-Friendly Swap: Hydrogen peroxide will kill the germs without all the harsh side effects.

4. Formaldehyde: Yep, the Same Stuff They Use in Morgues

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and unfortunately, it’s found in a surprising number of cleaning products. It can cause skin irritation and respiratory issues and, with prolonged exposure, has been linked to certain cancers.

Eco-Friendly Swap: Choose natural disinfectants like vinegar.
